About Horn Elementary

Welcome to Ernest Horn Elementary! Horn is located in the city of University Heights, an enclave surrounded by Iowa City and near the University of Iowa campus. This year’s enrollment is approximately 450 students in Kindergarten through Sixth grade. Horn has a diverse community with students from 30 different countries speaking 28 languages.

All classes are straight grade; K-5 classrooms are self-contained while 6th grade rotates for science, social studies and writing. Students are provided instruction in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, as well as music, art, health, P.E. and library where technology is continually integrated.  In addition, the building has many support teachers in the areas of  ELL, ELP, Title One, Counseling, Special Education and an Instructional Coach.
Our mission at Horn is to ensure all students receive a rigorous, high-quality education in a safe, kind and respectful environment that celebrates who we are and fosters the love of learning. We know that this cannot be accomplished alone, therefore we encourage parent involvement to support our students in their educational journey and celebrations along the way.
